My parents were both born in 1947 so they both turn 66 this year. Dad celebrates his birthday today so to celebrate his special day, I took a look back in history to see how different things were 66 years ago.
Harry S. Truman was President, Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, the average house cost $6,600, average annual wages were $2,850, a gallon of gas cost $0.15, cost of a first class stamp was $0.03, a loaf of bread was $0.13, our federal debt was $257.1 billion, the original Miracle on 34th Street was released, The Best Years of Our Lives won the Academy Award for best movie, Francis Craig had the top song of the year (Near You), the microwave oven was invented, and Chuck Yeager with the USAF broke the sound barrier.
Farrah Fawcett, Arnold Schwarzenegger, David Letterman, Steve Forbes and Stephen King were also born in 1947.
Dad was born on a Sunday in Decatur, Indiana to Hubert and Opal Williams Jasper, as their second child of three. He has been husband to Susan for 44 years, father to me, Jane E, and Brent, and “Poppie” to his grandkids. We are so thankful and blessed to still have him in our life over eight years after receiving a dismal cancer prognosis. We all live each day as if there is no tomorrow as a result of this “scare” and work hard to make as many memories together as we can each year. Here are some from this past year…
Happy Birthday! Love you Daddy.
