I am sure most of you have heard of Dave Ramsey, a personal money-management expert and extremely popular radio personality. He wrote the New York Times best-selling book, Financial Peace, and has now introduced how to pass this on to your kids early through a program called, Financial Peace Junior. I ordered this on Amazon last week for Ashley and Connor and we are also going to be using the same principles, on a more tween-scale, with Cole.
What Jason and I are both learning is that money habits develop very early in children – good and bad. We wanted to start finding fun ways to teach them about how to handle money so that they can avoid the same money mistakes many people (some right under their noses) make. We want our children to learn how to work, give, save and spend – just like they will have to do in the “real world” someday. Although we all love to give to our children, this system doesn’t really teach them much about real life. In life, if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. They need to learn this at an early age so they don’t grow into lazy adults still expecting an “allowance”. I know too many of these “adults” and those are not the type of children we want to raise.
A couple of applicable verses as we begin this journey…
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
“In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Work as if you were doing it for the Lord, not for people.'” Colossians 3:23
